Oyuncu, sinemacı ve sunucu olarak tanıdığımız Toprak Sergen, bugün farklı birkaç uğraşıyla karşımıza çıkıyor. Yedi yıl önce kurduğu topraksergen.tv yayın portalıyla internet yayıncılığı yapan Sergen, üç yıldır da Dalyan’da organik üretimle uğraşıyor. “Tek bir yere takılıp kalmanın anlamı yok. Enerjimi pek çok alanda kullanıyorum” diyen Toprak Sergen ile televizyon, teknoloji ve doğa üzerine keyifli bir söyleşi gerçekleştirdik.

Onu oynadığı diziler, sinema filmleri ve sunuculuğunu yaptığı programlarda görmeye alışmıştık fakat yedi yıldır televizyondan uzak duruyor. Çünkü Toprak Sergen, bugünkü ‘televizyonculuk’ anlayışına oldukça karşı. Bu nedenle kendine yeni bir yol haritası çizerek yedi yıldır organik tarımla uğraşıyor.Televizyonu neden bıraktınız sorusuyla başlıyoruz söyleşimize. “Bırakmadım, televizyon programlarında yer almıyorum, almayacağım da” diyor ve eleştirisini şöyle ifade ediyor: “Yedi yıldır yapmıyorum, zaten televizyon bu yayınlardan ibaretse ben yer alamam.Televizyonu yıkmak için çaba sarf ediyorum.Televizyonun bu şekilde olmaması gerektiğine inanmıyorum çünkü. Televizyon, insanları uyutmak üzerine kurulu bir şeye dönüştü. İnsanların artık bilim, kültür ve sanatın olduğu şeyleri görmesi gerekiyor. Uygar ülkelerde böyle uygulanıyor. Umarım bir gün bizde de böyle uygulanır.” Televizyonlardan uzaklaşmasının bir diğer nedeni olarak da eğitimsiz herkesin televizyon ve sinema sektöründe oyunculuk yapması olduğunu belirtiyor.

Oyunculuğu tamamen bıraktınız mı? Sizi cezbedecek projeler gelmiyor mu?

Siyahın tersi beyaz değildir. Oyunculuğu bırakmıyorum,sadece doğru zamanda doğru enerjiyle doğru şey oluşursa neden olmasın. Benim bir ayağım Londra’da.Orada oynayabilmek için yabancı dilin iyi olması,dans edebilme, yakın dövüş sporlarından en azından birini bilme, şarkı söyleyebilme ve daha pek çok şey gerekiyor. Eğer yeterliysem neden orada oynamayayım?“Filinta” dâhil çok teklif geldi, oynamıyorum. Çok özel bir şey olursa neden olmasın ama sette repliğini 30 kere tekrar ediyorsa birileri, o sette problem vardır.Televizyon ayrıca çok eski bir anlatım dili. Nasıl ki eskiden radyo dinleniyordu mutfaklarda. Şimdi de salonlarımızda bütün gün televizyon açık. Bu, geri kalmayı engellemiyor. Öykünün özü, aslında bizim internetle dünyayı yakalayamamamız” açıklamasını yapıyor.

topraksergen.tv de bu noktada mı devreye giriyor?

Yedi yıl önce kurduk bu yayın portalını. Ciddi bir ekip tarafından yönetiliyor. 20 saat civarında yayın yapıyoruz. Sosyal medya kanallarıyla beraber 1.5 milyon takipçimiz var. Televizyonda gereksiz görülen her şeye burada ulaşabilme imkanı veriyoruz insanlara. Hayvanlar, doğa, bilim, kültür, sanat ve engelsiz kardeşlerimizle ilgili insanların televizyonda göremedikleri şeyleri görebilmelerini sağlıyoruz.Bizde temel kural ‘üç dakika’dır. İzleyici fazlasını izleyemez. Televizyonda ise uzatabildiğiniz kadar uzatabilirsiniz. Bu sistemde bir tür pulsar olmak gerekiyor. Çok sık fakat kısa ve dozunda yayın yapmak gerekiyor. Televizyon bu yüzden olmuyor.

Her hafta ciddi sponsorlarla ekrana gelen diziler,televizyona olan ilgiyi göstermiyor mu?

Bence öyle olduğu algısı yaratılıyor. Yeni bir dizi büyük reklamlarla geliyor. Her yerde reklamları dönüyor fakat dizi iki üç hafta sonra yapımcısının haberi olmadan dahi yayından kaldırılıyor. 10 bin civarında reyting cihazının olduğu evlerdeki izlenim oranları baz alınıyor. Milyonlarca üyesi olan Kablolu TV’ler de baz alınarak bu reytingler hesaplansın öyle olmadığı ortaya çıkacaktır. Eğer Türkiye bu seviyedeyse çok üzülürüm. Reytingler ölçülüyor sürekli ama 20 milyon kişi ölçüme dâhil edilmiyor ki. Sadece diziler değil, birkaç adamın bir araya gelip oturup saatlerce spor yorumu yaptıkları programlar var. Bunları dinlemek zorunda değiliz. Özgür irademiz var, ne istiyorsak açıp reklamsız internetten izleyebiliriz. İnsanlar dünya üzerindeki istedikleri her bilgiye anında ulaşabiliyorlar. Kendi konumunu internet dalgasının üzerine çıkaramayanlar oldukları yerde kalırlar. Bu dalgaya karşı çıkmak çok saçma,sürüklenirsiniz.

Organik tarım yaptığınızı öğrendik. Teknolojiyi yakından takip ederken gelenekten de kopmuyorsunuz.

Enerjimi pek çok alanda kullanıyorum. Tek bir yere takılıp kalmanın anlamı yok ki… Uluslararası Organik sertifikalı bir tesisimiz var, bu tesisimizde insanlar hem konaklayabiliyorlar hem de ürünlerimizi (nar suyu, limon suyu ve bal) alabiliyorlar. Üçüncü yılımız tamamlanıyor, ne noktaya varırız bilmiyorum. Ben zaten şehrin içerisinde olmayı çok sevmiyorum.Dolayısıyla sürekli doğanın içerisinde olan yerleri
seçiyorum. Hayat siyah ve beyazdan ibaret değil,ara tonlar da var. Organik çiftliğimin olması şehir hayatını tamamen bıraktığım anlamına gelmez. Bu sebeple dünyayı geziyorum bol miktarda.

Sadece Dalyan’da mı tesisiniz var?

Evet. Dalyan Deltası, UNESCO tarafından 2013 Dünya Kültür ve Koruma Mirası altında. Türkiye’de sadece üç bölge giriyor bu korumaya. Diğerleri de, Akyaka bölgesi ve Tuz Gölü. Tuz Gölü zaten çöl oldu, bir şekilde kurtarılabilir mi diye düşünülüyor.Dalyan Deltası’nın ekosisteminde ise ne istersek var;şelale, dağ, tepe, göl, çöl… fakat kendi bindiğimiz dalı kesmeye devam ediyoruz.

Günde kaç saat çalışıyorsunuz?

Ben her an ve her şekilde çalışabilecek durumdayım.Ne zaman, nerede olabileceğimi bilmiyorum ki.Havayla aynı seviyede. Ayağımın altında bir bağ yok. Geçen gün bir arkadaşım aradı, toplantı için,Dalyan’daydım. Toplantı için gelmen lazım, dedi.Bugünkü teknolojik imkanlarla gelmeme ne gerek var dedim. Zorlamasına rağmen tele konferansta 15 dakika konuştuk ve işi hallettik. Böyle kısa bir toplantı için uçak kullanıyoruz, ayak izi, emisyon salıyoruz. Bir de gereksiz yere kendimizi götürüyoruz oradan oraya. Telekonferansla birbirimizin derdini
anladık sonuçta.

Chose organic and varied life
Renowned actor, film maker and show host, Toprak Sergen today a ppears in front of us with a few varied hobbies. Broadcasting from his Internet streaming portal topraksergen.tv for seven years, Sergen is also involved with organic produc tion for the last three years. “It is meaningless to get stuck in one place. I utilize my energy in many fields” says Sergen. We had a very pleasant discussion on television, technology and nature.

W e’ve got used to see him on the TV series,movies and on the shows he was hosting, but for the past seven years, he’s been staying away from television. Because Toprak Sergen is very much against the notion of “television broadcasting” on today.He’s been drawing himself a new road map and is involved in organic faming for the past seven years.

We begin our interview with the question, why have you given up television?

“I haven’t, I m not taking part in television programs and I won’t” he replies and continues with this criticism: “I haven’t been doing it for seven year, and if television is all about these broadcasts, then I won’t be part of it. I’m making huge efforts to tear down television. Because I believe this isn’t what television is meant to be. Television turned into something that is used to keep people sedated. People need to see things that involve science, culture and art. This is how it’s done in modern countries. I hope it will be so for us as well one day.” He states that another reason why he moved away from television is that many uneducated people were in the television and movie sector as actors, he says.

Have you completely given up on acting?Are there not any projects that may tempt you?

The reverse of black is not white. I’m not giving up on acting, it’s just a matter of having the right energy at the right time to make the right thing, and if it happens, why not? I have one foot in London. In order to play there, it is necessary to be fluent in foreign language, to dance,to know at least one close combat martial arts, to sign and a lot more. If I’m capable, why wouldn’t I play there?
There were many role offers, including “Filinta”, I’m not taking those up. If it’s to be something special, why not.But if someone keeps repeating the same line 30 times on the set, then that set has a problem. Also, television is a very old narrative medium. It’s like the old days when radios were listened to in kitchens. Nowadays we have a television on in our living rooms all day. This doesn’t prevent us from lagging behind. The moral of the story is, we couldn’t catch up the world with the Internet” He explains.

Does topraksergen.tv cones into the picture at this point?

We have established this broadcasting channel seven years ago. It is led by a very professional team. We keep broadcasting for about 20 hours. Together with social media channels, we have about 1.5 million followers. We give people the chance to reach everything that is deemed unnecessary on the television. We allow people to see thing they couldn’t on television: animals, nature, science,culture, art and out unimpeded brothers. Our principle rule is “three minutes.” The viewer can’t watch more than that. You may extend it as long as you want in television.In this system you need to be like some sort of pulsar. You need to broadcast frequently but short and with the right dosage. This is why television doesn’t work.

Doesn’t the series with serious sponsor backing that keep appearing weekly on our screens indicate the interest in television?

I believe this perception is engineered. A new series comes in with flashy advertisement. The advertisements appear everywhere but in two or three weeks, the series is removed from air even without its producer knowing about it. The ratings are based on around 10 thousand households’ television watching preferences.If the rating were to be calculated based on Cable TV providers with millions of subscribers, it would be apparent that this isn’t the case. I would be very sad if this were the level Turkey is. Ratings are currently being measured but 20 million people are not included in those measurements. Not only series, there are programs where few man gather and make sports
critiques for hours. We aren’t obliged to listen to these.We have free will, we can watch whatever on the Internet without advertisement. People can instantly reach any knowledge they want around the globe. Those who fail to elevate their statuses above the Internet wave will
stay where they are. It is a dumb idea to resist against that wave, you’ll be swept aside.

We have learned that you’re involved in organic farming. You’re staying true to traditions while following closely the technology.

I utilize my energy in various fields. It is meaningless to get stuck in one place… We have a facility with International Organic certificate, people can stay in our facility and can purchase our products. (pomegranate juice, lemon juice, honey) The end of our third year is coming closer, I don’t know where we’ll end up. I don’t really enjoy being in the city. Therefore, I chose places that are in the middle of nature. Life isn’t all about black and white, there are gradual tones. Just because I have an organic farm doesn’t mean I’ve completely given up on city life. For this reason I travel a lot around the globe.

Is Dalyan your only facility?

Yes. Dalyan Delta is graned World Cultural Heritage Protection by UNESCO in 2013. Only three regions are granted this protection is Turkey. The other are Akyaka region and Lake Tuz. Lake Tuz has become a desert already, they are pondering on whether it can be saved somehow. The ecosystem of Dalyan Delta has everything we can ask; waterfall, mountain, hill, lake, desert.. yet we keep cutting the branch we’re currently sitting on.

How many hours you work per day?

I can work anytime and under any circumstance. I don’t know where or when I may be. Same as the air. I have no shackles on my feet. Previous day, a friend of mine called for a meeting, I was in Dalyan. He said, you need to come for the meeting I told him there was no need for me to come with the technological means of today.Despite his insistence, we talked in teleconference for 15 minutes and were done. We get on planes for such a short meeting, leave a footprint, emit carbon. We also carry ourselves from here to there needlessly. We could
come to an understanding with teleconference anyway.
